I was visiting my aunt and while she was showing me pictures of my cousins, I was reminded of events in the past and at the ages they were. The IMAGES brought me back to different times in our lives. Then in the living room was an IMAGE of Jesus hanging on the wall. Now this picture I had never seen before so it was interesting from that angle. Each picture you see of Jesus is different because you see through the eye of the painter. Most of them look like an American white guy, not that there is anything wrong with that.
Does our Jesus image, look like us, ethnically? So we develop these images of Jesus from what we think He looked like, and surprisingly, we make Jesus look like us. PAINT A PICTURE OF JESUS RIGHT NOW. WHAT WOULD BE QUALITIES YOU WOULD HIGHLIGHT; WHAT WOULD BE FEATURES YOU WOULD NOT DRAW A LOT OF ATTENTION TO IN YOUR PAINTING?
We get our IMAGES from the Bible where so much is written about Him. And we get some understanding from Him working in us and teaching us through experiences of life. ARTISTS DO THIS ALL THE TIME. They learn as much as they can from books, or even from the witness of people who knew the subject matter. And then with all their life-time experiences, they portray how that would look on canvas. WHAT WOULD YOUR JESUS LOOK LIKE?
When we spend a lot of time reading and discussing with others about Jesus (or anyone else), we get a clearer idea of what He would be like. We would learn of His compassion & mercy. We would learn of His emotions for others. We would learn that he was the “life of the party” type guy. I especially like that He sounds like a fun guy, while on a serious mission.
Did Jesus have a “boyish” childhood? Did He run around and play with other little kids in the neighborhood?
As He grew up, did He enjoy dating girls? Was He a “ladies man?”
Did He wear all the latest fads, and comb His hair in the most trendy style?
Would He have a cell phone, and a computer? Would He know how to “tweet?”
What kind of a car would He have today? Would He be a gourmet cook?
So much of Jesus to know about, and so little time to get to know Him. IF JESUS WERE TO PASS YOU ON THE STREET DOWNTOWN TOMORROW, WOULD YOU ACTUALLY RECOGNIZE HIM? COULD YOU PICK HIM OUT OF A LINEUP?
I spent the weekend with one daughter, husband (sil), and their children. My Daughter and I picked out five dinner ideas and went shopping for the ingredients. When we got back, we started to assemble the items. First, was the cubed beef rump on skewer. My daughter (maybe a little overwhelmed with all we had to do), started to add the ingredients for the cubed beef into the bag. All of a sudden saying, “Oh No! I put too much horseradish into the bag.” Five times more than it called for, and I said to her it was okay. Some of you know, “IT’S OKAY!” My daughter thought she might have ruined the dish. Later when we were eating it, I asked her about it, and “It was okay.” She learned that disasters are not always disasters. But it helped to have a “father” there to say it was okay. MY IMAGE OF GOD THE FATHER IS THAT HE SAYS TO ME IN THESE TIMES, ‘IT’S OKAY!’ AND TO YOUR QUESTION, ‘WHAT WOULD JESUS EAT?’, WE HAD LAMB!
The next day, out at a restaurant, she asked me if she would like an ingredient in the item she had selected. I TOLD HER, “YES, SHE WOULD LIKE IT.” In just a few brief moments, she knew she could trust my judgment for her. She had to put her trust in me, and that was learned on Saturday. So when she got the meal, I asked her if it was okay, and she said, “YES!”
MATT. 7:9-10 “OR WHAT MAN IS THERE AMONG YOU, WHEN HIS SON SHALL ASK HIM FOR A LOAF, WILL GIVE HIM A STONE? OR IF HE SHALL ASK FOR A FISH, HE WILL NOT GIVE HIM A SNAKE, WILL HE?” I am reminded of the jesting of my two sons, towards this daughter, that when she asks them if something is in the dish, they jokingly tell her “no” or “yes” to see if they can get a rise out of her. This is just sibling fun. BUT THE TRUTH OF THE MATTER IS, WHAT IMAGE DO YOU HAVE OF JESUS IN YOUR LIFE? DOES THE FATHER TREAT YOU WITH ‘IT’S OKAY!’
WHEN YOU ASK FOR BREAD, DOES HE GIVE YOU A STONE? WHEN YOU ASK FOR FISH, YOU GET SNAKE? What kind of FATHER do we have, that He will give us what we ask for according to His riches. HE WILL NOT WITHHOLD FROM US ANYTHING THAT WILL HELP US TO GROW AND BECOME ALL THAT WE NEED TO BECOME.
THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT IMAGE OF GOD … TO KNOW AND EXPERIENCE HIS LOVE. THERE ARE NO CATCHES, NO STRINGS ATTACHED TO HIS GRACE AND MERCY.
